YEP Says: Why Leeds residents may be able plan their going with dignity

by Crematorium Editor Westerleigh News

If you have been to a crematorium service of late, you may have been taken aback at the ‘conveyor belt’ process.

These funerals tend to be quick and functional. Because of demand, they tend to be fast and fuss-free and that may be OK if your loved one wanted such a service. But we imagine most of us would prefer something with a little more dignity and time. So it is good news that a new crematorium is being planned in Garforth. It sounds like a good idea for people on that side of the city who currently have to contend with a backlog at Lawnswood crematorium which we are told operates at well above capacity in peak months. The growing population of Leeds - from 510,000 in 1951 to an estimated 819,000 by 2024 - means there will inevitably be a rise in the number of deaths. And with traditional burials falling out of favour because of cost and land shortage, it seems more and more of us will choose crematoriums for our last goodbye.Anything which makes this process more personal will be good news for the bereaved, for whom saying farewell is such an important occasion. And it will be good news for those people who are planning their own funerals. If it offers a ‘creme de la crem’ service, then that will be all the better.
